When restoring files from a System Protection job in BackupAssist you receive the error:

The restore process was aborted to avoid an operating system bug that can cause an important disk sub-system to hang and disk writes to fail until a reboot

This error is reported when BackupAssist considers that accessing a historical backup may cause the operating system to hang or crash.

One of the factors that can trigger this condition is if a hang has been previously detected by BackupAssist on this machine while accessing a historical backup.

An indicator for this is the registry value VhdmpHangWasObserved=True in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cortex I.T\BackupAssist\v11

To workaround the issue, the VhdmpHangWasObserved=True entry should be removed from this location in the registry and the server should be rebooted.

The restore attempt should then be performed again.
