Build an iSCSI target on Windows 7 for free!

Just a quick update to let you know about a great little free utility I’ve stumbled upon that you might find handy if you’re a user of BackupAssist.

I’ve recently been testing BackupAssist with iSCSI target destinations and have been using the iSCSI target built into Microsoft Server 2008 R2. This works great but unfortunately is only available for 2008 servers.

One of my tests revolved around a small virtual lab made up of a couple of Windows 7 virtual machines, one of which I wanted to make an iSCSI target. I had previously used a trial of StarWind iSCSI SAN target and found it an excellent solution, but had somehow managed to skip over the fact that they also offer a cut down version that is available for personal use.

Even though this is a cut down version of the full SAN package, you’re still able to set up an unlimited number of iSCSI targets, drives and connections. Very generous!

So if you are looking to build an iSCSI Target on Windows 7 or even Windows Vista I would strongly recommend you take a look.
